What is an Equal Opportunities Policy?

An Equal Opportunities Policy is an employer's commitment to equal opportunities. As well as making a clear statement to all employees about the company's expectations with regard to equal opportunities it also acts as a reference point in the event of any subsequent disputes.

The policy should comply fully with the requirements of the Equality Act 2010, and all other legislation and various Codes of Practice dealing with the elimination of discrimination and the promotion of equal opportunities.

The Equality Act 2010 ties up all existing equality legislation. The protected characteristics are now all in one Act: age, disability, race, sex, pregnancy and maternity, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership status, religion or belief, and sexual orientation.

Why do you need an Equal Opportunities policy?

It is generally illegal to discriminate in employment matters against anyone on the grounds of race, colour, nationality, ethnic origin, sex, marital status, disability or gender reassignment.

An Equal Opportunities policy should show that you are aware of your obligations under the law and that your business is committed to meeting those obligations. It may also go to demonstrate that your company is keen to benefit from the diversity of society which may well be viewed favourably by prospective customers.

When tendering for public sector tenders or large private sector tenders the vast majority of organisations will require their suppliers to have an Equal Opportunities Policy and may ask to see a copy.
